L'Anse Township was established in 1846, and the Village came into existence in 1871 because of a new railroad line that ended at the head of Keweenaw Bay. In the early 1870's, L'Anse was a booming town and was becoming a trading center of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Businesses were moving in, new buildings were being constructed, an iron ore dock was built and the price of land skyrocketed. People talked about this new center surpassing even Marquette and Escanaba, Michigan. It is a great area, with a cultural mingling of people of many nationalities who were drawn to the areas mining, lumbering, and agricultural opportunities. Today the Village is the county government seat and business center for most of the surrounding area with fine shopping facilities, churches of many faiths, a modern hospital and a variety of other services... AND "Tourism Is Key". In town there is the Village Park where there is a swimming beach, playground and pavilion (where weekly summer concerts are held), and just "down the beach" is a great deep water Marina for access to, and boat slip rentals on, Lake Superior. A beach volley ball court there is a popular attraction. A nine hole golf course, a gambling casino, several waterfalls, camp sites, a X-Country ski trail, the Bishop Baraga Shrine, and Mount Arvon, Michigan's highest point for trekking, are just a short drive from this commercial property. There is something to do here year-round - The groomed L'Anse to Big Bay Snowmobile Trail and Ice Fishing on the "Big Lake" is just a few miles away from this property.
