MICHIGAN COMMERCIAL PROPERTY FOR SALE! This Commercial Building is located on a high visibility section of Highway in Kenton, Michigan, an unincorporated community in the southwest part of Duncan Township on M-28 and the East Branch of the Ontonagon River. Kenton was a station on the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway. Kenton was first homesteaded in 1887 by George C. Townsend. When the tracks finally reached Kenton in 1889, the surrounding densely wooded forests were filled with white pine, that was cut and shipped out by this railroad line. Farming followed logging. A post office was established in February 1889. In 1890, Duncan Township was established by the Houghton County Board of Supervisors, and was named after John Duncan it's chairman. By the mid-1890s, Kenton became the site of a large sawmill financed by bank financier Edward Wheeler Sparrow, of Lansing, Michigan. William Kroll who had purchased a homestead north of Kenton in 1891, began acquiring lands in the area in Sparrow's name. Together, Sparrow and Kroll incorporated under the name of the Sparrow-Kroll Lumber Company on April 19, 1895 and built a sawmill on the east branch of the Ontonagon River. This mill operated until 1909. Kenton reached a population of 500 by 1900, with many people living in the surrounding logging camps. Today, Kenton is a hub of activity. The Town Hall, Fire Hall, County Maintenance Garage, Kenton District Forest Service Office, Taverns with food service, and nearby resorts keep the town "hopping". Logging is still active, and tourist activities abound. The Village is surrounded by thousands of acres of Ottawa National Forest Lands... the Lower Dam Lake Campground, the Sparrow-Kenton Wayside Picnic Area (with facilities) at Kenton, and Sparrow Rapids National Forest Campground are especially popular with visitors. Three-On Lake, as well as Plantation, Barchard, Beck, Beitner, Bender, Bog, and Bowstead Lake, as well as fishing rivers and creeks (Buritts Creek, Onion Creek, Beaver Creek, Adrian Creek, Jumbo River, Dorrie Creek, Walton Creek, Debutant Creek, Erickson Creek) provide lots of fishing action in the area. One of the most popular hiking, snowmobiling and touring destination in the area is The Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness, a 14,139 acre wilderness. Here you will find the Sturgeon National Wild and Scenic River and its tributaries with steep rugged gorges up to 300 feet deep, and 1/2 to 1 mile wide. The 36 x 48 building being offered for sale is located on busy M-28. There is direct access to Multi-Use State Trail No. 8 from the property.
